Overview
Pöyrisjärvi is a pristine wilderness area in northwestern Finnish Lapland near the Norwegian border, offering hikers a rare opportunity to experience remote Arctic nature with minimal infrastructure. Phone coverage is not guaranteed throughout the area; varies by provider and elevation. Remove SIM card for emergency 112 calls to access any available network.
Etiquette
Respect reindeer fences and use gates properly. Follow Finnish right to access code. No drones in wilderness areas. Fire-making allowed on state land with precautions.
Money
Finland uses euros (EUR). ATMs available in Hetta. Cash may be needed for some wilderness services. Reservation hut at Pöyrisjärvi costs €11 per person.
Packing
Bring: map, compass, GPS, first aid kit, mosquito repellent, warm layers, waterproof gear, river-crossing shoes. Canoes can be rented locally for river routes.
Safety
Wilderness experience strongly recommended. Always leave your route plan with someone. Weather changes rapidly; adequate cold-weather gear essential even in summer.
Transport
Hetta is the main access point with good bus connections; taxis available through Enontekiö municipality. Normal cars cannot access the wilderness area; 4WD may be needed for some approach roads.

Summer: 15-20°C day, 5-10°C night, possible frost even July-August. Winter: down to -40°C. Hard winds common. Weather can change within hours.
