Overview
Porto da Cruz is a compact surf-and-hike village on Madeira's windswept northeast coast, offering a pocket beach, levada trails into lush laurel forest, and a working rum heritage—all without the Funchal crowds. The village sits beneath the dramatic Penha da Águia (Eagle Rock) escarpment, with whitewashed houses climbing steep hillside farms still irrigated by levadas.

Before you go
Etiquette
Portuguese is the local language. Greet with a handshake; in shops and cafés, a simple 'Olá' or 'Bom dia' is appreciated. Dress modestly when visiting the church.
Money
Portugal uses euros (€). ATMs available in Machico; bring sufficient cash as Porto da Cruz has limited banking services. Some restaurants may overcharge tourists—agree on prices before ordering.
Packing
Pack hiking boots or sturdy shoes for levadas, swimwear for the beach and pools, a light rain jacket, and sun protection. Flip-flops are fine for the village but not for trails.
Transport
Walking suffices within the village. Bus 113 connects to Machico and Funchal. Rent a car for maximum flexibility to reach trailheads and neighboring towns.
Weather
Mild year-round climate with oceanic influences. Levada hiking best September–May. Winter brings more rain; pack layers and rain gear regardless of season.
