Portmagee is a tiny fishing village on the Iveragh Peninsula with a 2016 population of just 123. Its claim to fame is as the departure point for boat trips to Skellig Michael, the UNESCO World Heritage Site monastery perched on a remote Atlantic rock.

Mobile coverage from Three and Vodafone; no Eir signal. Valentia Island and Ballinskelligs have practically no coverage. Signal resumes on N70.

Portmagee has no ATM. Bring euros in cash as some boat operators only accept cash. Nearest ATM is at Centra in Waterville, 12 km east. Prices quoted in euros.

Bring rain gear year-round; layers essential even in summer. Sturdy walking shoes for cliff paths. Cash in euros. Sunscreen and wind protection for boat trips.
Safety
Small quiet village with minimal crime. Cliff paths at Kerry Cliffs and Bray Head require caution. Weather-dependent Skellig trips can be cancelled without notice.
Transport
Portmagee sits on N70 Ring of Kerry with Skellig Ring side-loop. Local Link buses 287A/B and 285 provide limited service. Car or bicycle recommended for flexibility.
Weather
Skellig Michael boat trips operate April-September weather permitting. Summer offers best chance of calm seas for landing. Shoulder seasons less crowded but Skellig trips may not be possible.
