Getting around

Port Macquarie has a limited bus service with odd timing and early termination. The most useful route is Shelly Beach to Town Centre, which runs regularly and is best for beach access without a car. The CBD is compact enough for walking to most attractions, beaches, and restaurants. Several quiet streets and cycleways exist for cycling, though check contours as routes vary between flat and hilly.

When to go

Peak season is summer during the Christmas and New Year period, when all accommodation books out and minimum stay periods are commonly enforced. Whales migrate past Port Macquarie during early winter (June-July) and summer (September-November), making these ideal times for whale watching from headlands or via charter boats. School holidays bring night tours at Sea Acres Rainforest Centre for nocturnal wildlife spotting.

Safety

Late on Friday and Saturday nights, avoid the main street as brawls often occur between people heading from the Macquarie Hotel to nearby venues. Large groups of 18-25 year-olds can be hostile towards random passers-by. Other areas to avoid late at night include the Town Green and the McDonald's car park near Settlement City. While Port Macquarie is generally safe, some robberies have occurred in Koolonbung Creek Reserve; do not enter alone or at night and stay on boardwalks.
