Overview
Pointe-Noire is the second largest city of the Republic of the Congo with a 2017 population of nearly 1.2 million, serving as the nation's oil industry center and major sea port. The city has a distinctly French feel due to its colonial past and the large number of French expatriates and tourists.

Not many people speak English. FM radio stations broadcast in French including RFI on 93.2MHz. WiFi available at some hotels for an hourly fee.
Health
Hospitals, health centers, and pharmacies provide medication and primary consultation. Facilities include Pharmacie de la Raffinerie, Hopital de Loandjili, and Pharmacie Pascal.
Money
CFA Francs (FCFA) is the local currency. Some hotels accept euros or US dollars. Money exchange offices are available; rates are good for euros and dollars but poor for British pounds. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside the best hotels.
Safety
Main parts of the city and beach areas are relatively safe for walking with few beggars. Exercise caution at Côte Sauvage beach at night and watch for broken glass.

Shared taxis cost FCFA 150-1000 depending on distance. Direct taxis FCFA 700-1000. Airport transfers FCFA 1000-2000. Collective taxis (100-100) charge a flat FCFA 150.

Wet season October-April (28°C avg, up to 225mm rainfall). Dry season May-September (24°C avg, minimal rainfall).
