Overview

Poás Volcano National Park is Costa Rica's most visited protected area, offering the rare chance to peer into an active volcano crater. The main crater spans approximately 1.32 km in diameter and reaches 300 m deep, making it the largest geyser-type crater in the world.

Fees

Foreign visitors pay US$15 admission. Tickets sold online exclusively. Confirm availability before purchasing.

Hours

Park open daily 8AM-3:30PM. Visitors Center open 07:00-13:15. Morning visits recommended for best visibility.

Safety

Stay on marked trails. Crater gases can be strong near the rim. Altitude may affect those unaccustomed to high elevations.

Transport

Public buses run from San José to the park area. Confirm park status with bus driver before traveling.

Weather

High elevation (2,708m) means cool temperatures year-round. Morning visits avoid afternoon fog. Rain possible in any season.

What to bring

Layers for cool mountain air, rain jacket, water, sturdy walking shoes. Camera for crater views. Sulfur smell is common.
