Overview
Piazza Armerina is a modest hill town in Sicily's Enna province that draws travelers almost exclusively for the nearby Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing the most extensive and best-preserved Roman mosaic collection in the world. While the town itself (population around 20,000) has a pleasant Baroque cathedral and winding medieval streets, it serves primarily as a base for visiting the villa's extraordinary frescoed floors depicting Roman daily life, hunting scenes, and famously the 'Bikini Girls' mosaic.
