Why Go?

Peshawar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Pakistan, dating to 539 BCE as Purushpura, capital of the Kushan Empire under Kanishka. The city sits at the eastern end of the Khyber Pass on the crossroads of Central and South Asia, giving it a distinct Afghan flavour distinct from the rest of Pakistan. It is famous for Chapli Kebab, Peshawari shoes, and the vibrant Qissa Khwani Bazaar, offering a frontier atmosphere that feels more Central Asian than South Asian.

Getting In

Bacha Khan International Airport serves domestic flights from Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and Chitral via Pakistan International Airlines and other carriers. Peshawar Cantonment railway station on Saddar Road is the main station, with Peshawar City railway station as a secondary stop. Overland from Afghanistan, taxis go to the Torkham border crossing (Rs 2000 in 2025), with security arrangements required for foreigners.

Getting Around

Taxi and auto-rickshaws are the primary way to get around Peshawar, though the city is notorious for polluted air and congested streets. Walking is possible in the old city area and between nearby sites. Shared autos cover popular routes cheaply.

When to Go

Summer (April-September) brings hot weather and the seasonal "Kulfa" treat from Qissa Khwani Bazaar, but temperatures can exceed 40°C. Winter months (December-February) are milder, ranging 5-20°C. The city has been volatile with Taliban-Pakistani military conflict from 2010 onwards; check current travel advisories before visiting.

Food & Drink

Peshawar's signature dish is Chapli Kebab, a flat beef kebab found at Jalil Kabab House near Hayatabad Entrance and shops along Ring Road. Namak Mandi near Shoba Bazaar offers mutton roast, BBQ, and karhai. Clock Tower Food Street serves local spicy foods. For sweets, try Faluda from Qissa Khwani Bazaar. Kawa (green tea) is the city's signature drink, served sweet, while Sharbat-e-Sandal—a yellowish-green drink with black seeds—appears in markets during summer. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a dry state, making alcohol hard to obtain.

Things to Do

Must-see sites include Mahabat Khan Mosque (1630, Mughal-era white marble), Cunningham Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar, built 1900 for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee), Sethi Mohallah (late 19th-century mansions with Central Asian wooden carvings), and Bala Hissar Fort. The Peshawar Museum and Gorkhatri City Museum detail archaeological history. In summer, hiking tours to the mountains can be arranged through Green Tours near Greens Hotel in Peshawar Cantt or Pearl Tours at Pearl Continental Hotels. Shopping at Saddar Bazaar, Dean's Trade Centre, and Shafi Market (bargaining essential). Hayatabad offers Tatara Park, Bagh-e-Naran with its zoo, and swimming pools.

Buy

Bargaining is essential at most shops, especially for fabric. As a foreigner, expect inflated initial prices—offer half and negotiate from there. Take a local if possible. The old city stocks Pakistani and Afghani handicrafts at Namak Mandi, Khyber Bazar, Bazar Shah Qabool Olia, and Sadar Road. Shafi Market in the Sadar area is best for undergarments and fabric, including rare hand-stitched "Peshawari panty." Dean's Trade Centre is less crowded with mostly fixed prices, featuring A to Z Mart for general goods. R-Sheen on Arbab Road offers fabric at fixed prices. University Road has big plazas with fixed-price fashion outlets.

Safety

Check travel advisories from your government before visiting, as the region has been volatile with Taliban-Pakistani military conflict. The 2014 Peshawar school massacre saw Taliban militants kill 132 children. Police are visible on streets. As a stranger and guest, you can rely on local support if threatened—obey local laws and avoid behaving stereotypically foreign. Border areas and agencies are administered by tribal authorities outside regular police control; entry is dangerous for foreigners. The Khyber Pass (one hour away) is currently inaccessible and extremely dangerous to visit due to Pakistan's security situation.

Go Next

Afghanistan is reachable by taxi to the Torkham border (Rs 2000 in 2025), with security arrangements organized by police at checkpoints—you may pay extra for detours and prolonged travel time. On the Afghan side, join light-blue shared taxis to Kabul (about 5 hours, US$15 in 2025). Polio vaccination is required at the border. Within Pakistan, the Swat District (Kalam Valley), Upper Dir District (Kumrat Valley), and Chitral District offer scenic mountains, though some areas require special permissions.
