Overview

Pennabilli is a medieval hill town that rewards visitors with unique artistic installations by poet Tonino Guerra, who created 'I luoghi dell'anima' (places of the soul) throughout the town starting in 1989. The town also has an unexpected connection to Tibet through 18th-century missionary Orazio Olivieri, who created the first Italian-to-Tibetan dictionary; the Dalai Lama visited in 1994 and 2005.

Culture

Tibetan connection is unique: Dalai Lama visited twice (1994, 2005). Bell and prayer wheels installation on hilltop. Tonino Guerra's art installations are the main attraction.

Events

Artisti in Piazza in early June is a major busker festival drawing 40,000 visitors over four days with performers from around the world.

Italy uses the euro (€). ATMs available in town. Credit cards accepted at some hotels and restaurants but carry cash for smaller establishments.

Safety

Very safe town with no reported tourist theft or violence. Standard precautions sufficient. Carabinieri station located at Viale dei Tigli.

Transport

Pennabilli has no train station. Buses connect to Rimini (about 1h 15min). A car is the most convenient way to explore the Montefeltro area and reach nearby medieval towns.
