Overview

Pallas-Yllästunturi is Finland's most visited national park, drawing around 400,000 visitors annually. The park offers a rare opportunity to experience Fell-Lapland above the tree line, where fell landscapes meet spruce forests and mires.

Connectivity

GSM coverage is spotty or absent in many park areas. Connections best in open or high locations. WiFi available at visitor centres.

Money

Finland uses the euro (€). ATMs available in nearby villages like Hetta, Äkäslompolo, and Ylläs. Most establishments accept cards, but carry some cash for smaller vendors and hut fees.

Packing

Bring three-season sleeping bags even in summer. Mosquito repellent, long sleeves, and mosquito-proof tents essential June–August. Compass and good map necessary even on marked trails. Portable stove recommended.

Safety

Emergency number is 112 throughout Finland. Inform someone of your plans with a deadline for rescue call. Be prepared for self-sufficiency in emergencies, especially in bad weather.

Transport

Nearest airports: Kittilä (KTT), Rovaniemi (RVN). Night trains from Helsinki to Kolari stop near the park. Regional buses and shuttle taxis connect train stations and airports to villages and visitor centres.

Weather

Peak season February–April offers thick snow and sunny days. Summer brings mosquitoes (mid-June onwards). Ruska foliage peaks mid-September. Winter temperatures regularly drop below -20°C, reaching -40°C in extreme cold.
