Overview
Ourense is a 105,000-population Galician city that many travelers pass through en route to Santiago, but it deserves a stop. The main draw is its geothermal activity: free hot springs (Burgas, Termas A Chavasqueira) bubble at 43-67°C right in the city.
Before you go
Health
The thermal pools are generally safe, but water temperature can cause burns. The 67°C Burgas spring requires caution. Public healthcare is available for EU citizens with EHIC cards; private clinics exist for others.
Language
Galician is the official language, closer to Portuguese than Castilian Spanish. Everyone understands Spanish. English is common in the hospitality sector. Learn basic greetings in Galician as a courtesy.
Money
Spain uses the euro (€). ATMs are plentiful in the city center. Most hotels and restaurants accept cards, but some smaller tapas bars may be cash-only.
Transport
Avanza buses (lines 1, 3, 33) connect the train/bus station to Praza Mayor frequently. Ourense railway station has national connections. Regional buses serve the coast and surrounding towns.
Weather
Summers are hot (30°C), winters wet and cold (2-12°C). The thermal baths are most welcome in winter. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures ideal for sightseeing and walking El Camino.
