Why go?
Oulu is the fifth largest municipality in Finland and the largest city in Northern Finland, serving as the capital of Northern Ostrobothnia. The city has evolved from its historic origins in wood tar and salmon trade to become a major high-tech centre, particularly in IT and wellness technology. Oulu was selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2026, making it an increasingly attractive destination. The city is home to Oulun Kärpät, a successful hockey team playing in Finland's top Liiga league, and the birthplace of the first IRC server in 1988.

Get in
Oulu is well-connected by train on the main north-south railway line, making it convenient to travel from southern Finland including Helsinki, Tampere and Turku. The city has flights from Helsinki, primarily dominated by work-related travel. Oulu is also situated on two main south-to-north highways: highways 4 and 8. The Oulu Airport is located 15 km south-west of the city centre and features a terminal open whenever flights are operating, with free Wi-Fi, device charging points, and the Hailuoto Lounge.

Get around
The city centre is walkable, with most attractions within short distances. For getting to further attractions, the Oulu PTA bus network covers the city and surrounding areas. Taxis are available including Otaxi (€7.35 flag fall plus €1 per minute), Menevä Oulu (€4-7 flag fall depending on time), iTaksi (€4-6 flag fall), and Fixutaxi (minimum fare €10). The railway station is open 04:00-01:20 and is located 1 km east of the market square.

When to go
Oulu experiences distinct seasons with long, cold winters and brief, warm summers. Summer (June-August) offers the best weather for outdoor activities, with extended daylight hours and temperatures that make the city terraces and market squares lively. Winter brings darkness and cold but offers opportunities for winter sports at nearby Ruskotunturi ski centre. The city hosts various events throughout the year, and the European Capital of Culture 2026 will bring additional cultural programming.

Oulu's dining scene offers various options from budget to upscale. For cheap eats, Pizzeria Old Lemoon provides good-value pizzas. Lunch restaurants like Katri Antell-lounasravintolat offer meals for €12-14. The city has cafes including Coffee House Oulu and Puistokahvila Makia popular with students. Drinking in Finland can be expensive, with typical pints around €6, but local craft beers from breweries like Maistila, Sonnisaari and Hailuoto are available. The long drink 'lonkku' (gin and grapefruit) is a Finnish favourite.

Things to do
Oulu offers diverse attractions and activities. Culture lovers can visit the Oulu Museum of Art (€8) and the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum (adults €6, closed for renovation until 2026). The Tietomaa Science Centre (€15 adults) is closed until 2026. Outdoor activities include strolling through Hupisaaret park with the 750-m salmon ladder, kayaking or stand-up paddling (€25/hour SUP rental) along the river delta, and summer swimming at Nallikari beach. Ghost-hunting tours explore Oulu's reputation as Finland's 'ghost capital'. The city has two cinemas showing original English films.

Safety
Oulu is generally a very safe city, but travellers should take standard precautions. Avoid arguments late at night in fast food joints. Pickpocketing is rare but keeping an eye on belongings is advisable. Bike thefts are common, so always lock bikes securely. Some drunks may be present in Rotuaari, Valkea shopping centre's summer street, and Mannerheim park, but they rarely cause problems. The police are helpful though some officers may lack English skills; contact them at +358 29-546-0211.

Connectivity
The panOULU network provides free wireless internet coverage in the city centre. Most cafés offer free Wi-Fi, though connections may not be strong. Oulu PTA buses also have Wi-Fi. The tourist information centre has a computer with free internet access. The city uses standard European Type F power plugs (220V, 50Hz).

Budget
A backpacker daily budget in Oulu would typically include: dorm beds from €25-35, budget hotels from €25-50 for a private room, meals from €10-15 for lunch buffets or €6-10 for fast food, local transport around €3-5 per day, and attractions costing €5-15 each. Evening drinks start from €6 for a pint. The city is more expensive than many European destinations, comparable to other Nordic capitals.

Day trips
Several worthwhile day trips are possible from Oulu. Hailuoto island (largest in the Gulf of Bothnia) is accessible by free ferry with own car or bus, and in February by ice road. Iso-Syöte offers downhill skiing and access to Syöte National Park. Kuusamo by Finland's eastern border provides access to Lapland, Ruka ski resort, and the Karhunkierros hiking trail (80 km). Koitelinkoski rapids are about 25 minutes by car, and Ii village with its beautiful old town is 35 km away.

Adventure Park Huikia
A considerably expensive "adventure park" near the main swimming pool of Oulu. The park's courses are mainly many metres up on the trees where you move with, e.g., cable ropes. A fun and exciting experience for everyone.

Cinema Finnkino Plaza
Completed in 2007, Plaza movie theatre features one of the biggest movie screens in Finland. Most of the movies shown on theater's eight screens are original English versions and are subtitled in Finnish and Swedish, though some children's movies are dubbed in Finnish.

Cinema Star
The oldest still functioning (yet very modern) movie theatre in Oulu, Star movie theatre features 3D digital movies. Most of the movies shown on the theatre's three screens are original English versions and are subtitled in Finnish and Swedish, though some children's movies are dubbed in Finnish. Star was nominated as Finland's most disabled-friendly establishment in 2007.

Cycle or walk
In the summer, rent a bike or walk to the beach in Tuira on the north side of the river Oulujoki, a popular place with locals, passing through Ainola park and over the dam on the way. From there head eastwards, crossing back to the south side of the river and onwards to Värttö. Visit Koivurannan kahvila in an old house by the river, Kasamintie 51. Then head back to the centre for a total 8-km trip or take the bus number 7, 9 or 10 back to the centre.
