Overview
Ouahigouya is the fourth largest city in Burkina Faso and the final major settlement before the Mali border, making it a crucial transit point for overland travelers. The town was founded in 1757 and serves as the capital of Yatenga region, acting as the center of Mossi culture where Mooré is the common language.

Mosquito nets are available at some hotels but not all. Hotel Liberté notably lacks mosquito nets. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the region.
Money
CFA franc (XOF) is the local currency. Cash is the primary payment method in Ouahigouya. ATMs may be limited or unavailable, so travelers should bring sufficient cash from larger cities.
Safety
Female travelers should exercise caution at bars, particularly the "Military Bar." Normal urban safety precautions apply. Border crossings may involve attempted bribery.
Transport
Minibuses depart daily at 06:30 to Koro (2,500 CFA) for onward travel to Mali. The journey is dusty with unreliable connections at the border. Motorcycle taxis (zmid) are available within town.
