Why Go
Ölüdeniz is a Mediterranean beach resort in Lycia, Turkey, famous for its 'Blue Lagoon'—the flat-calm lagoon that gave the resort its name. Until the 1990s it was a tiny village, but direct European flights and Dalaman Airport upgrades transformed it into a package-holiday destination. The resort sprawls inland from Belceğiz beach through Hisarönü and Ovacık, with a combined population of 6132 (2022), swelling dramatically in hot dry summers.

Get In
International visitors typically fly into Dalaman and are bussed to hotels. Fethiye is 17 km north via good road; dolmuş minibuses take 30 minutes and run every 5 minutes at peak times from outside Carrefour supermarket on Ölüdeniz Cd near the Fethiye bus station. Dolmuşes also run from Faralya (for Butterfly Valley), Uzunyurt, and Kabak to the south on a slow, lumpy dead-end road. Ölüdeniz is not a Port of Entry—if arriving by boat from Greek waters, clear immigration in Fethiye.

Get Around
Dolmuş minibuses from Fethiye run through Ovacık, Ölüdeniz main village, Hisarönü, and Belceğiz beachfront at the start of Blue Lagoon peninsula. The Belceğiz beachfront is a pedestrianised mall.

See
The Blue Lagoon is the iconic attraction—photographed from parachutes in brochures—with turquoise and ultramarine waters in good light, though flat and dull when overcast. The lagoon is a nature reserve with public access 07:00-18:00 via a 1 km peninsula separating it from the open sea. No park admission fee is charged, but expect multiple charges for parking, beach entrance, chair, parasol, and overpriced food. The peninsula beach and underwater are gravel, pebbles, and rocks—beach shoes recommended. Nearby Kayaköy is a ghost village with Byzantine ruins on an islet.

Do
Mount Babadağ rises to 1969 m / 6460 ft from sea level; a cable-car ascends from 500 m south of the village, and a sealed lane hairpins up the east flank. Paragliders launch from Babadağ's cable-car top station—beginners take tandem rides strapped to an instructor for one-hour flights (trainers required, not flip-flops). Belceğiz beach is sandy and best for children unlike the pebbled lagoon peninsula. Boat trips run west to Gemiler island or south to Faralya with half a dozen operators touting along the beach. Diving centres include Bubbles and Lykia World. The Lycian Way (540-km marked hiking trail) has its western terminus in Fethiye, with the first stage 9 km to Kayaköy then 5 km into Ölüdeniz, continuing east to Faralya (5 hours) and Kabak (another 5 hours) toward Antalya.

Buy
Lots of small stores open late daily; Ölüdeniz Shopping opposite Club Hotel Meri is open 24 hours. For larger provisions, Carrefour is next to the Fethiye bus station.

Eat
Two main eating strips run along Belceğiz beachfront and through Ölüdeniz / Hisarönü. Offerings are typical Turkish/East Mediterranean, pizza, 'Full English All-Day Breakfast,' and pub fare resembling a sunny Blackpool. Indian cuisine is available at Saffron in Hisarönü, plus a handful of Chinese restaurants.

Drink
Cafés and restaurants serve alcohol. Freestanding bars line the beach and Hisarönü, including Paddy's Irish Pub (daily 09:00-04:00), completing the Blackpool comparison.

Sleep
Ölüdeniz and Ovacık are cluttered with hotels, most with online presence bookable through hotel websites. Budget options include Türk Hotel and Beldeniz Otel (B&B doubles from 1500 TL), while midrange options like Sundia by Liberty and Liberty Lykia (adults-only, from 5000 TL) cater to higher budgets. Camping is available at Aydede Camping and Ölüdeniz Doğa Kamp on Aşağı Yaşdam Cd.

Connect
Ölüdeniz and its approach roads have 4G from all Turkish carriers. As of June 2023, 5G has not rolled out in Turkey.

Go Next
Fethiye (17 km north) features Lycian rock tombs overlooking the town. Kayaköy is a ghost village whose Greek population was deported in 1923 and was never re-settled. Faralya to the south lies at the foot of Butterfly Valley, a scenic canyon, with Kabak further south and its easier-accessible canyon.

When To Go
Mediterranean summers (June-August) are hot and dry—the peak beach season when the resort swells with visitors. Winters are mild with occasional heavy rainstorms and many businesses close. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant temperatures ideal for hiking the Lycian Way and avoiding the summer crowds.
