Overview

Nuweiba is a remote, budget-friendly beach destination on Egypt's eastern Sinai coast, offering a raw Red Sea experience far removed from package-tour resorts. The town stretches 7 km along the coastline, centered on the port area with the main tourist strip at Tarabin to the south, where backpackers camp among Bedouin-run beach huts.

Before you go

Connectivity

Internet cafes exist in Nuweiba city. WiFi is available at some camps and resorts but is often painfully slow (New Soft Beach explicitly warns about this).

Culture

Nuweiba has a significant Bedouin population, especially in Tarabin. Respect local customs, remove shoes when entering tents if invited, and accept hospitality graciously.

Money

Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the local currency. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside resorts; bring cash, especially for camps in Tarabin and north of town.

Safety

Egyptian authorities take drug offenses extremely seriously—prison terms are common. Solo women travelers report feeling safe, but dress modestly in town out of respect for local customs.

Transport

Blue-and-white taxis are the main local transport. Negotiate fares hard—expect LE 5-10 for port-to-city trips. Buses connect Nuweiba with Taba, Dahab, Sharm el Sheikh, and Cairo.

Weather

Visit October-April for mild temperatures (18-25°C). Summer (June-August) can exceed 40°C, making outdoor activities unpleasant. Winter nights can be cool.
