Overview
Nukus is a dusty, decayed Uzbek city that most travelers write off as a transit stop—yet it holds one of Central Asia's most remarkable hidden treasures: the Igor Savitsky Collection at the Karakalpak Museum of Arts. Savitsky spent decades secretly acquiring thousands of works by Soviet dissident artists forbidden by Stalinist socialist realism, creating a collection many locals call the best museum in Uzbekistan.
