Overview

North Sydney is a small community of 5,700 people on Cape Breton Island's eastern shore, serving primarily as the "Gateway to Newfoundland." It functions as the western terminus of the Marine Atlantic ferry service, acting as the marine link for the Trans-Canada Highway to Newfoundland. The town has a number of restaurants and motels catering to ferry passengers, making it a practical overnight stop if crossing to Newfoundland requires waiting for the next sailing.
