Connectivity
No cell coverage in most of the park. Free WiFi at Skagit Information Center in Newhalem; paid WiFi ($5/day) at Stehekin ranger station.
Money
Most services are limited to small stores in Newhalem and Stehekin. Cash preferred at smaller establishments. No ATMs in the park; use banks in Burlington, Concrete, or Winthrop before entering.
Packing
Layers for variable weather, sturdy hiking boots, bear spray (recommended), first aid kit, ample food and water. No services between Newhalem and Mazama.
Safety
Remote wilderness with limited emergency services. Carry the Ten Essentials, file trip plans, and be prepared for self-rescue. Bear canister recommended for backcountry camping.
Transport
State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway) is the main vehicle access mid-April through November. Stehekin is only accessible by ferry, trail, or float plane. Cell service is non-existent most places.
Weather
Summer is best (late April-November when WA-20 is open). Expect cold nights even in summer, sudden storms at any elevation, and possible snow at high elevations even in July.
