Overview
Nieu-Bethesda is a remote Karoo village of about 200 residents, best known for the Owl House — a surreal art installation created by Helen Martins who transformed her home into an extraordinary exhibit using concrete and glass sculptures of owls, camels, and mermaids until her death in 1976. The village has developed a small but vibrant artistic community centered around the Bethesda Art Centre, making it a unique detour for those interested in South African folk art and creative tourism off the beaten path.
