Overview
Nelson sits on the west arm of Kootenay Lake in British Columbia's West Kootenay region, a compact walkable city of 11,000 celebrated for its exceptional collection of restored Victorian-era heritage buildings from the silver-rush era. The city is nicknamed "The Queen City" and was the filming location for the 1987 Steve Martin comedy Roxanne.

Nelson is generally a safe city. Standard urban precautions apply. Be aware of wildlife when hiking in surrounding mountains and forests.
Transport
Nelson's downtown is very walkable and compact; a car is helpful but not essential for exploring the city center. Mountain Man Mike's and Silver City Stagelines provide long-distance bus connections.

Winters are cold with heavy snowfall (avg 551 cm in January); summers are warm and drier with cool nights. Best for skiing Dec-March, hiking/outdoors May-Oct.
