Overview
Nazaré is a small Portuguese village in the Oeste region that became world-famous for its gigantic surfable waves at Praia do Norte, which entered the Guinness Book of World Records. The village combines a sandy beach, historic Marian shrines on the hilltop Sítio, and affordable grilled fish restaurants along cobblestone streets.

Culture
Local women wear traditional seven-coloured flannel skirts—ask permission before photographing them. The village has strong Marian religious traditions.

Portugal uses the euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants but smaller establishments may be cash-only.
Safety
Swimming at Praia do Norte is dangerous due to powerful waves and currents. Stick to supervised areas of Praia da Nazaré for safe swimming.
Transport
The funicular (Ascensor da Nazaré) runs 07:15–24:00 connecting beach to Sítio. Regional buses serve the Oeste region via rodoviária services.
Weather
Summer is crowded and hot; autumn/winter brings the famous giant surf swells but some services close. Best beach weather is May–September.
