Overview

Nankana Sahib is the holiest city in Sikhism, built around the exact spot where Guru Nanak, the faith's founder, was born in 1469. Pilgrims come from across India and the diaspora to bow at Gurdwara Janam Asthan, take a dip in the sarovar (sacred pool), and eat free community langar.

Culture

Remove shoes before entering any gurdwara. Cover your head with a scarf or cap (offered free at entrances). Bow or nod respectfully before the Guru Granth Sahib if present. Photography is allowed in most areas but respect worshippers.

Drink bottled or purified water. Hospitals available: DHQ Nankana Sahib and Umer Nawaz Hospital Near Tehcel Mor. Medical facilities are basic; serious cases require transfer to Lahore.

Pakistani Rupee (PKR) is the currency. ATMs near the railway station dispense cash; most shops and restaurants accept cash only. Currency exchange is available at banks in the market area.

Weather

Summers are extremely hot (40-45°C May-June). Winters are mild (10-20°C). Best time to visit is October-March. Monsoon (July-August) brings heavy rain and occasional flooding.
