Overview

Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province and its cultural, economic, and scientific center, known as "Heroes' City" because it was here that the "first shots of the revolution were heard" during the communist uprising of August 1, 1927. The city is split by the Gan River (Ganjiang): the old, cultural, and claustrophobic main city lies east of the river, while the new, shiny, almost cultureless city of Honggutan sits to the west where many expats live.
