Why Go

Nainital is the Lake District of Uttarakhand, a British-era hill station built around Naini Lake and ringed by seven peaks. It draws Delhi families in summer for boating, a high-altitude zoo, and treks to viewpoints like China Peak (2,628 m). In winter it gets snowfall and crowds thin. For backpackers, it offers affordable homestays in nearby Pangot (15 km), trekking without altitude sickness, and a pedestrianized Mall with smooth pavements.

Understand

Nainital is split into two halves: Tallital (southern, lower) and Mallital (northern, upper), divided by the lake. The town was devastated in the Landslip of 1880 and rebuilt by the British. It is named after goddess Naina Devi. The population is around 41,400 (2011 est.) and the region is renowned for prestigious educational institutions and bird's-eye views of the Himalayas.

Getting In

Nainital has no airport or railway; the nearest railhead is Kathgodam (34 km), connected to Delhi and Lucknow. Long-distance buses arrive from Delhi, Dehradun, and Haridwar. By road, it's about 7 hours from Delhi (300 km). The most scenic approach is via the Khurpatal road winding through pine forests. The nearest major city is Haldwani (35 km) for supplies and connections.

Getting Around

Nainital is best explored on foot—the Mall has smooth pavements and is closed to vehicles 6-9PM in summer. Cycle rickshaws charge a fixed ₹20 for the full Mall length, dropping only at ticket booths. Buses connect to surrounding towns frequently. The town is small enough that most sights are within 20 minutes' walk.

When to Go

The peak season is May to July when temperatures reach 32°C in the plains below but stay pleasant in Nainital. March through mid-June shows the lake's flora in full bloom—ideal for boating. November and December attract tourists for fresh snowfall. December–January bring sub-zero temperatures and regular snowfall. Avoid monsoon (July–September) for landslip risk.

Where to Stay

Budget hotels cluster near Tallital and the Mall, with rooms from ₹700–₹1,500. The Savoy Hotel offers beds from ₹150 (very basic). For a mountain experience, head to Pangot village (15 km from Nainital) where Jungle Lore Birding Lodge, Mountain Quail, and Hidden Valley Camp offer jungle cottages, tents, and lodges from ₹700–₹1,500 per room. Homestays like Emerald Trail near Bhimtal cater to eco-conscious travelers. The Alka Hotel on the Mall has direct lake views from upper floors.

Food and Drink

Punjabi staples dominate the Mall eateries, reflecting Delhi holidaymakers. Embassy, Machan, Woods, and Sher-e-Punjab line the Mall; Purohit (beside Embassy) and Shiva in Barra Bazaar offer vegetarian and sweet options. Janardan Resort in Pangot serves simple veg and non-veg meals for ₹200 for two. Nightlife is virtually non-existent—bonfires replace bars, and alcohol is served only in 5-star hotels. Try local Herbal Chai at dhabas along the Mall.

Things to Do

Boating on Naini Lake is essential: row boats cost ₹160 (half round) or ₹210 (full round); paddle boats with boatman are ₹210/hour. The Gobind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo charges ₹30 adults, ₹10 children, ₹25 for cameras, closed Mondays. Trek to China Peak (2,628 m) in 60 minutes for Himalayan panoramas (best September–November) and cheap tea at the top. Tiffin Top (2,292 m) offers horse rides for ₹300–₹1,000. The Cave Garden at Sukhatal has six themed caves open 9:30AM–5:30PM. Snow View point is reached by aerial ropeway: ₹300 round-trip adults, ₹200 children.

Learn

The 5-Day Youth Camp at Van Niwas, Bara Patthar (April–June, September) teaches basic rock climbing, yoga, meditation, and trekking for ₹2,200 (₹400 non-refundable deposit). Food is vegetarian; no alcohol. Contact Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Delhi to apply. Kumaon University in Nainital offers short-term courses. Vipassana meditation courses run August 4–20 with Dr. Ravindra Deo, conducted in Hindi and English outdoors.

Buy

The Mall and Barra Bazaar are the main shopping areas. Look for Kumauni woolens: colorful cardigans, caps, sweaters, and shawls. Traditional handicrafts include handmade candles, ornamental pieces, and wooden crafts. Fresh fruit—blueberries, peaches, mulberries, strawberries, apples, cherries—is seasonal and sold locally. Eco-friendly candlesticks make cheap, transportable souvenirs.

Safety

Nainital is generally safe, but high-season crowds attract opportunistic petty theft. When driving uphill, avoid hard braking—petrol pumps close around 7PM, so keep the tank full. Fog can reduce visibility on mountain roads. The Cave Garden's deeper passages narrow significantly; claustrophobic visitors should stop at earlier caves.

Stay Healthy

G.B. Pant Hospital on Ramsay Hospital Road in Tallital (tel: 235388) is the main medical facility. Vaccine Research Institute is in Patwadangar (tel: 241129). Veterinary Hospital and Tiwari Forest Hospital are in Haldwani. Sitapur Eye Hospital handles ophthalmology cases. Carry personal medication as pharmacy options in the town are limited.

Connectivity

Mobile coverage is provided by all major Indian carriers (Airtel, Jio, BSNL) with 4G in the town center. WiFi is available at mid-range and upscale hotels. Standard Indian power plugs (Types C, D, M) are used. SIM cards are easily purchasable with ID proof at mobile shops on the Mall.

A backpacker can survive on ₹800–₹1,200/day including a ₹150–₹500 dorm or budget room, ₹100–₹200 for meals, ₹160–₹210 for boating, and local transport. Trekking to China Peak is free beyond the hike. Pangot homestays (₹700–₹1,500/room) offer better value than staying in town for multi-night stays.
