Why go?
Muntinlupa is a typical bedroom community within Metro Manila where the majority of its population commutes to Manila for work. The city features two affluent business districts—Filinvest City and Ayala Alabang—that provide a sense of modernity, while the rest of the city remains an ordinary Philippine urban area full of congestion and poverty. Hidden attractions include the country's smallest lake at Jamboree Lake, the fish-trap-shaped Museo ng Muntinlupa, and the Bayanan Baywalk overlooking Laguna de Bay.

Understand
Muntinlupa was once an agricultural municipality along the western shores of Laguna de Bay, but after the construction of the South Luzon Expressway, it rapidly urbanized as industries moved in and residential subdivisions replaced farmland. The development of Filinvest City and Ayala Alabang transformed it into another central business district of Metro Manila. Today the city is full of contrasts, having both a gritty side and a sterile side, with National Road and Alabang–Zapote Road being perennially congested surface roads.

Get in
Muntinlupa is accessible via the South Luzon Expressway with exits at Alabang and Susana Heights. Jeepneys, buses, and tricycles serve the city along National Road and Alabang–Zapote Road. The PNR Metro Commuter Line has stops at Sucat and Alabang. Vista Terminal Exchange (VTX) on National Road in Alabang serves as a hub for Route 25 jeepneys and P2P buses operated by MetroExpress Connect.

Getting around
The main modes of transport are jeepneys running along National Road and Alabang–Zapote Road, tricycles for shorter routes within barangays, and buses connecting to Manila and neighboring cities. Tricycles can be hired from National Road to reach Bayanan Baywalk. The city lacks a planned arterial road and public transportation network outside of Filinvest City and Ayala Alabang.

Muntinlupa offers diverse dining from street food to fine dining. For authentic Chinese cuisine, Ho Chai Lai on National Road in Tunasan serves dim sum, noodles, and congee. PRLAN Cafe on National Road in Poblacion offers Filipino recipes with two dishes and rice. Japanese fish-shaped cakes (taiyaki) with mung bean or custard filling are available at Taiyaki near Caltex. Things to do
The Insular Life Corporate Center in Filinvest City features glass-covered twin towers with a viewing area on the 34th floor. Jamboree Lake on Insular Prison Road in Poblacion claims to be the Philippines' smallest lake with a small viewing point. The Bayanan Baywalk on Bautista Street provides views of Laguna de Bay, though partially blocked by kangkong (water spinach) plantations. Museo ng Muntinlupa on Centennial Avenue in Tunasan is shaped like a traditional fish trap and documents the city's history from founding to cityhood.

Buy
Muntinlupa has major shopping destinations. Festival Alabang in Filinvest City houses department stores, two supermarkets, two indoor amusement parks, and a variety of restaurants. Ayala Malls South Park on National Road was redeveloped from former Nestle warehouses with fast-food restaurants, a food court, Robinsons supermarket, and department store. Alabang Town Center in Ayala Alabang was built where the Boom na Boom amusement park once stood, featuring a Spanish-inspired central park lined with fine dining restaurants. For budget shopping, the New Muntinlupa Public Market (Alabang Public Market) on Montillano Street has tiangges selling dry goods, clothes, and houseware.

Stay safe
Alabang is notorious for petty crime including pickpockets, bag snatchers, hold-up robbers who may rob at gunpoint, and scammers. Beware of touts in taxis and tricycles who may overcharge or take you elsewhere. Even the business districts of Filinvest City and Ayala Alabang require common sense with valuables like cell phones, money, and cameras. Most populated areas straddle the West Valley Fault, a major fault that could cause a magnitude 7.2 earthquake; fault zones are marked with orange spray paint and earthquake drills are regularly held.

Connectivity
Muntinlupa has multiple mobile network providers available. Several hotels mention WiFi access including Acacia Hotel Manila (WiFi in public areas and LAN), and Vivere Hotel provides business facilities. Power plugs follow the Philippine standard (Types A/B with 220V).

Muntinlupa is the first city in the Philippines to ban single-use plastics since 2011. Visitors must bring reusable bags when shopping. Food packaging must be recyclable, though plastic utensils like spoons, forks, knives, and straws are still permitted. The ban does not cover plastic bags for wet goods.
