Overview

Mount Field National Park is one of only two sites worldwide that fulfills seven of the ten UNESCO World Heritage criteria, making it part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The park offers Russell Falls—a rare three-tier waterfall—plus numerous glacial lakes, dense forests, and the Mount Mawson skifield for winter sports.

Connectivity

Mobile phone coverage is limited or absent throughout most of the park. No public WiFi. Inform someone of your plans before entering isolated areas.

Money

No ATMs exist within the park. Bring sufficient cash for park passes, cafe purchases, and accommodation. Credit card availability at the visitor centre is uncertain.

Packing

Bring all food and water supplies. Warm clothing essential even in summer. Good hiking boots recommended for walking tracks. Park pass required for entry.

Safety

Carry snow chains in winter. Avoid night driving due to wildlife. Check in/out at visitor centre for isolated area hikes. Temperatures can match European alpine conditions.

Transport

Private vehicle is essential—there's no public transport to Mount Field National Park. From Hobart, follow Lyell Highway (A10) to New Norfolk, then B61 Gordon River Road.

Weather

Cold alpine climate year-round. Winters drop below zero with snow; summers rarely exceed mid-twenties. Rain is frequent. Pack layers regardless of season.
