Overview
Moorea is a budget-friendly alternative to nearby Tahiti, offering lagoons, hiking trails, and traditional Polynesian culture without the capital's prices. The island is mostly rural with farming as the main economy, providing a quieter, more authentic experience than tourist-heavy destinations.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile data and WiFi available through hotels and local providers. Type E power outlets (220V) used.
Food
Poisson cru is the signature dish. Local baguettes (100 F) are cheap and portable. Hinano and Tabu are local beers. Food trucks (roulottes) less common than in Tahiti.
Health
Mosquitoes can be problematic inland and away from the coast. Bring insect repellent for hiking trails.
Money
Only a few banks on Moorea, all closed Sundays. Currency exchange available at major hotels but at lower rates. Plan accordingly and bring enough cash for your stay.
Safety
Petty theft occurs; secure valuables. Drunk driving is a serious problem. Cycling after dark is dangerous due to broken glass on road shoulders.
Transport
Scooter or car rental is essential for independent exploration. Taxis are outrageously expensive and public transport is virtually non-existent.
