Getting there

Montagu sits on the iconic Route 62, approximately 280 km from Cape Town. The most practical approach is driving via the N1 or R318 scenic route through the Keisie and Koo Valleys. No public transport serves the town directly, so arriving visitors typically rent a car or organize transfers. The journey from Cape Town takes roughly 3 hours by car.

Get around

The compact village center is best explored on foot, particularly along Long Street to view the Cape Dutch architecture. No public transport exists in Montagu, so longer trips require a rental car. Mountain bikes are available for rent, offering access to interesting trails in the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Adventure activities abound in Montagu. Hike along trails in the neighboring mountains, with Bloupunt and Cogmanskloof trail starting at Joubert Park at the town edge. The Gecko Trail in the Koo Valley offers a 16 km wilderness hike through Nuy River Gorge. Nuy River Gorge Kloofing provides one- or two-day canyoneering trips (Oct-Apr) with abseiling, boulder hopping, and swimming for R500-1300 per person. Rock climbers will find over 400 sport routes in the area. The hot springs 3 km out of town offer relaxation after adventures.

Every Saturday from 08:00-12:30, the Montagu Village Market fills Euvard Park on Bath Street opposite the Information Bureau. Browse local farm produce, art, clothing, craft, and delicious foods. For everyday groceries, Shoprite supermarket on the corner of Bath and Market Streets operates 08:00-19:00 and offers cheaper prices.
