Overview

Molfetta is a working-class port town of nearly 60,000 that has retained its maritime identity while offering architectural treasures rarely seen by foreign visitors. The town is famous for the Pulo, a dramatic karst sinkhole that ranks among Italy's most impressive geological features, and for two Romanesque-Apulian cathedrals built centuries apart.

Before you go

Culture

Molfetta has a strong working maritime identity — shipbuilding, fishing, and Mediterranean trade shaped its history and cuisine. The old town and port area retain an authentic, non-touristed character.

Food

Fish is the foundation of Molfetta cuisine. The signature dish is a rock fish soup with tomato, garlic, and parsley sauté in extra virgin olive oil. Restaurants are found near the port and in the old town.

Transport

Molfetta station is on the Lecce-Bologna Adriatic line with regional trains from Bari and Barletta. Five urban bus lines serve the town, but the compact historic centre is best explored on foot.

Weather

Best visited in spring or autumn for mild temperatures. Summers reach 30 °C and above, but free beaches and lidos provide relief.
