Before you go
Connectivity
Cellular service is sporadic and unreliable; generally better near the two highways. Don't depend on phone connectivity.
Fees
No entrance fees to the preserve. Some campgrounds charge $12-25/night. Mitchell Caverns day use is $10/vehicle plus tour fees.
Food
No restaurants in the preserve. Closest services are in Baker or El Oasis Cafe at Nipton (open six days a week).
Safety
Carry far more water than you think you need. Cell service is unreliable throughout the preserve. Download offline maps before visiting.
Transport
A private vehicle is essential—there's no public transportation. Road conditions range from paved highways to 4WD-only routes.
Weather
Spring and fall offer comfortable temperatures. Summer exceeds 100°F; winter can bring freezing temps and snow at higher elevations.
