Overview
Mohe is China's northernmost county-level city, perched at approximately 52°N on the Heilongjiang (Amur) River that borders Russia. Known as the "Arctic of China," it offers the country's only reliable chance to see the Aurora Borealis, particularly around Beiji Village (China's Arctic Village) during summer solstice when daylight lasts up to 21 hours.

Before you go
Connectivity
Cell coverage is poor in remote areas. Purchase local SIM in Harbin or Mohe before heading to attractions. Carry power banks—cold rapidly drains batteries. Offline maps are essential.
Money
Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the local currency. Cash is preferred in smaller establishments and villages. ATMs available in Mohe town but may have limits. Most hotels and restaurants in tourist areas accept mobile payment (Alipay, WeChat Pay).
Safety
Primary concerns are cold-related: frostbite, hypothermia, and equipment failure. Bring extra batteries and warm clothing. Stay on marked paths near waterways. Inform someone of your plans when visiting remote areas.
Transport
Mohe Gulian Airport (northernmost in China) connects to Beijing, Harbin, Jiagedaqi, and Jieyang. Mohe Railway Station (northernmost railway station) serves Heilongjiang. Within the region, private car hire or tours are essential since public transport is limited.
Weather
Mohe experiences extreme cold year-round with January averages of -34.9°C and record lows of -53°C. Even summer nights can be cool. Pack thermal layers regardless of when you visit.
