Overview
Modica is one of the eight "Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto" UNESCO world heritage sites. The town is in two parts: Modica Alta, perched on the southern Ibeli hill, and Modica Bassa, built lower in the valley.

Culture
Modica is a UNESCO-listed Baroque town rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. Modica Alta (upper town) and Modica Bassa (lower town) are connected by dramatic staircases and zigzagging roads.
Food
Modica chocolate (crystallized sugar method) is the signature treat, sold along Corso Umberto I. Antica Dolceria Bonajuto is the oldest chocolate maker. Traditional Sicilian cuisine available at Taverna Nicastro.
Money
Italy uses the euro (€). Cash is widely accepted; credit cards work in most restaurants and shops in Modica Bassa.
Transport
AST intercity buses connect Modica to Syracuse, Catania, Palermo, Ragusa, Pozzallo, and Noto from the north-edge terminal. Urban bus single fare is €1.10, day pass €1.80, but service can be irregular with waits up to 40 minutes.
