Overview
Merano (Meran) is a spa town in South Tyrol with a uniquely mild microclimate protected by surrounding peaks. The town has about 41,000 residents (2025), with a slight Italian-speaking majority (51.4%) and a German-speaking minority.

The thermal spa centre offers therapeutic treatments with naturally radioactive thermal waters. Pharmacies (Farmacie) are available in town for basic medical needs.

Merano is bilingual: Italian (51.4%) and German. Most signage and services are available in both languages. English is common in tourist-facing establishments.

Transport
SAER buses connect Merano to Bolzano and surrounding villages. The Funivie chair lift goes to Tirol. Trains require routing through Bolzano. Driving is convenient with SS38 and SS239 roads.
Weather
Merano's valley position provides a mild climate protected from harsh Alpine winds. Summers are warm (25-30°C), winters mild (5-10°C) with good skiing nearby.
