Why go?

Mechelen is a compact, walkable city about halfway between Antwerp and Brussels that punches above its weight for its size. It was the capital of the Netherlands under Margaret of Austria from 1506 to 1530, leaving a legacy of ornate churches, renaissance palaces, and UNESCO-listed architecture. The world-renowned carillon school trains bell players from globally, and the city hosts regular concerts from its church towers. Unlike the nearby capitals, Mechelen offers a more intimate scale with genuine local life, affordable accommodation, and excellent train connections to Brussels Airport.

Understand

Mechelen has approximately 80,000 inhabitants and sits on the river Dyle in central Flanders. Its residents are called "Maneblussers" (moon-extinguishers), named after a humorous incident where citizens mistook moonlight on the unfinished St.-Romboutstoren for a fire and mobilized to extinguish it. The city was famous for wood carvings, lace, and tapestry manufacture, with some original works still visible in its eight historic churches. Today Mechelen is developing as a center for non-profit organizations (Natuurpunt, AFS, Red Cross) because it is easily reachable but less expensive than Brussels.

Getting in

Mechelen station (Koning Albertplein 2) is the main railway hub with connections in all directions, including an hourly direct link to Brussels Zaventem Airport. Secondary Mechelen-Nekkerspoel station is closer to the historical center but only served by regional trains; most fast intercity services skip it. SNCB/NMBS operates regular trains from Antwerp (20 min), Brussels (20 min), Leuven (25 min), and beyond. Incoming highways include the E19 and A1.

Getting around

Mechelen is very compact; the city center is about 15 minutes walk from the train station and most attractions are reachable on foot. A few bus routes radiate from the city centre for those who need them. The city has a bike-sharing system (Flemish OV cycle) and cycling infrastructure is reasonable for the flat city center. Taxis are available but not commonly needed given the walkable scale.

When to go

Mechelen is a year-round destination. Summer (June-August) offers longer days, outdoor café culture on the Grote Markt, and the Planckendael Express bus to the animal park. The end of August brings Maanrock, a free 2-day music festival on the main square with multiple stages running from afternoon to early morning. Winter visits mean fewer crowds at museums and a cozy atmosphere in traditional bars. Spring and fall offer mild weather for walking tours and lower accommodation prices than peak summer.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from the Zandpoort Youth Hostel (€20-31 per night) near the station to distinctive options like Martin's Paterhof (from €89), a hotel built inside a former church with original architectural features. Hotel Brouwerij Het Anker (from €72) lets guests drink house-brewed Mechelse Bruynen on-site. Budget-conscious travelers can find mid-range chains like Holiday Inn Express (from €64 with breakfast) or NH Mechelen (from €65) in the historical center. The Hobbit Hotel (from €70) offers themed rooms but is far from the city center.

Food and drink

The main shopping streets Bruul and IJzerenleen radiate from the Grote Markt, lined with cafés and restaurants. For quick eats, Hete Patat (Nieuwwerk 1, behind the cathedral) specializes in Turkish-inspired stuffed potatoes. De Cirque (Vismarkt 8) serves pasta and steaks with helpful staff who will translate Dutch menus. Intermezzo (IJzerenleen 36) is known for Brussels waffles and desserts. Saturday morning markets at Grote Markt and Botermarkt offer local cheese, meat, seafood, and prepared foods. Brewery Het Anker (Guido Gezellelaan 49) on the ring road produces Mechelse Bruynen and Gouden Carolus beers plus jenever called Ouwe Klare and beer chocolates.

Things to do

St. Rumbold's Cathedral (Sint-Romboutskathedraal) dominates the skyline with its 97-meter tower (€8 to ascend, church free, 08:30-17:30). The Dossin Barracks memorial (€10 adults, €4 students under 21, free under 10) documents Holocaust history and opened in 2012. Palace of Busleyden (Frederik de Merodestraat 65, €15 regular) houses the municipal museum in a renaissance courtyard. The 45-minute boat cruise along the Dyle costs €6, departing hourly from Haverwerf. Families can head to Technopolis (Technologielaan, €9.50 adults, €7 children 3-11) for hands-on science exhibits, or Planckendael Animal Park outside the city.

Stay safe

While Mechelen previously had one of the highest crime rates in Flanders, the city has improved significantly, especially in tourist areas. It is now safe to walk through Mechelen's center. Travelers may want to avoid the outskirts at night, though there is little reason to visit those areas anyway for sightseeing.

Connectivity

As of June 2022, Mechelen has 4G coverage from Orange and Proximus/Scarlet, and 5G from Base/Telenet. SIM cards are readily available in Belgium from these providers. Most cafés, restaurants, and hotels offer free WiFi. Belgium uses Type E/F power plugs (220V/50Hz), standard throughout continental Europe.

Budget

A backpacker can manage on €60-80 per day in Mechelen: dorm bed €20-31, simple meals €10-15, museum admissions €5-15, local transport €3-5. Boat cruise is €6, cathedral tower €8. Evening drinks at local bars run €4-8. The Saturday market and self-catering at Match or Smatch supermarkets keep food costs down. Many churches are free to enter.

Day trips

Mechelen's central location makes it an ideal base for exploring Flanders. Antwerp is 20 minutes north by train with its diamond district, fashion scene, and nightlife. Brussels is only 20 minutes south as the national capital. Leuven, 25 minutes east, houses one of the world's oldest universities with a lively student atmosphere. Lier is a nearby small town with medieval sights, reachable by local train or bike.

Go next

From Mechelen station, direct trains reach Antwerp (20 min), Brussels (20 min), and Leuven (25 min). Brussels Zaventem Airport is connected hourly. The efficient Belgian rail network (SNCB/NMBS) makes car-free exploration easy. Local trains also serve Lier and other Flemish towns. For coastal trips, the train to the Belgian seaside takes about 90 minutes.
