Before you go
Connectivity
4G coverage from Airtel/Jio/BSNL is available but may be patchy inside ISKCON campus. WiFi exists in some guest houses but is not fast. Tourist SIM cards require Indian ID; buy at Kolkata airport on arrival.
Culture
Mayapur is a Vaishnava Hindu pilgrimage site and ISKCON headquarters. The atmosphere is serene, prayer-focused, and entirely vegetarian. Join kirtan sessions, attend arati ceremonies, or simply sit in the garden of the Pushpa Samadhi Mandir. Modest dress (covered shoulders/knees) and shoe removal are required in temple buildings.
Language
Bengali is the local language. Hindi and English are widely understood at ISKCON due to the international nature of the organization. Basic Bengali phrases enhance interactions with local villagers outside the campus.
Money
Indian Rupee (₹) is the currency. Cash is king in Mayapur—no ATMs within the ISKCON campus and limited card acceptance. Withdraw cash at Krishnanagar before visiting. Prasadam restaurant may accept cash only. Budget ₹500-1,000/day for a basic backpacker budget.
Safety
Mayapur is very safe overall. The ISKCON campus has security. Watch footing on uneven paths and verify boat safety on river crossings. No serious crime targeting tourists has been reported.
Transport
No trains or buses directly serve Mayapur. Reach via Krishnanagar (train from Kolkata Sealdah) then ferry/toto to Hular Ghat. Totos (electric rickshaws) are the main local transport within town. Negotiate fares in advance (₹10-30 per ride).
Weather
October-March is ideal: cool (15-25°C) and dry. Summer (April-June) is brutally hot (up to 40°C). Monsoon (July-September) brings heavy rain that can disrupt transport. Gaura Purnima festival in February-March draws large crowds.
