Overview
Martin served as the foremost Slovak cultural center during the 19th century, when most political activities for Slovak national emancipation were organized here. Today it preserves this heritage through its excellent museums, including the Slovak National Museum and the open-air Museum of the Slovak Village.

The surrounding mountains offer skiing at Martinské hole and hiking in Little Fatra and Great Fatra. A ferrata route (Ferrata HSZ) provides another outdoor option.

Martin has a main bus and train station serving regional connections. The city lies on the Turiec river between the Little Fatra and Great Fatra mountains.
