Maroua is majority Muslim. Dress modestly, especially near mosques and market areas. Tanners work with animal skins; sensitive travelers may find the smells strong near the leather district.
Money
Local currency is CFA Franc BEAC (XAF/FCFA). ATMs and banks are limited compared to Yaoundé or Douala. Carry cash for market transactions.
Safety
Benskin motorbike taxis have high accident rates. The N1 Highway is in poor condition. Use seatbelts in cars and helmets on motorcycles where available.
Transport
Motorbike taxis (benskin) dominate local transport at 100-300 FCFA per ride. Negotiate prices before mounting. Car rental available at airport or in town.
