Overview
Mariehamn is the capital and only proper town of the Åland Islands, a Finnish autonomous region with a distinct Swedish-speaking identity. With just 12,000 residents, it's a compact walking town centered around the maritime Västerhamn and Österhamn harbors.

Before you go
Connectivity
WiFi available at cafés like Bagarstugan and at the ÅSS marina. Mobile coverage follows Finnish networks. Power plugs are European type C/F (220V).
Language
Åland is Swedish-speaking; less than 6% of the 12,000 population speaks Finnish. Virtually everyone understands Swedish, and English is widely spoken. Finnish names like Maarianhamina appear mainly on ferry schedules.
Money
Currency is Euro (€). Prices are higher than Finnish or Swedish mainland due to tax-free status. Most shops accept Visa and MasterCard, but some reject Visa Electron. ATMs are scarce—look near bank offices on Torggatan.
Safety
Åland has extremely low crime. The former prison (closed 1975) is now a museum. Drunken fights recorded in statistics mostly involve cruise ship passengers.
Transport
Local buses cost €2.50 per ride (valid 2 hours). Five lines cover the town and extend to surrounding areas like Maxinge shopping centre. Taxis available. Town is walkable; bikes rentable from Rono or accommodations.
Weather
Best visited May-September for mild weather. July RockOff festival draws crowds. Winter is quiet with limited ferry service.
