Overview
Marakei is the only island in Kiribati's Gilbert Group with a deep blue lagoon located in its center, making it geographically unique. The island offers a rare opportunity to experience authentic traditional Gilbertese lifestyle with minimal modern interruption, preserved partly because it saw less World War II activity than neighboring islands.

Before you go
Connectivity
Communications are limited—most villages have a public phone, but mobile coverage and internet are unreliable or unavailable. Inform family of travel plans before arriving.
Culture
Marakei is a dry island with no alcohol sales. Leave offerings (tobacco/cigarettes) at shrines as a sign of respect. Traditional ceremonies like Te Katabwanin can be arranged on arrival.
Health
Medical facilities are extremely limited—a local clinic and village nurse only. Pharmaceuticals are unavailable. Bring all required medications and basic first-aid supplies.
Money
Cash is the primary payment method on Marakei. There are no ATMs or card facilities. Bring sufficient Australian dollar or local currency equivalents for your stay.
Safety
Basic safety is generally good, but medical emergencies could require evacuation to Tarawa. Pack comprehensive medical supplies and advise someone of your itinerary.
Transport
Getting around is by foot, bicycle ($5/day), motorbike ($20/day), or occasional truck lifts. Rent motorbikes from accommodation providers; buy fuel at the local shop before departing.
Water
Bottled water is in very low quantities in local shops. Guest houses can boil water for drinking. Visitors preferring filtered or bottled water should bring supplies or purification methods.
