Why Go?

Malang is East Java's most attractive large city, retaining its historical character despite rapid urbanisation. The city offers Dutch colonial architecture, ancient Hindu and Buddhist temple complexes, cool mountain climate, and serves as the primary gateway to Mount Bromo and Semeru volcanoes. It's a relaxed alternative to Surabaya with significantly less traffic and a more manageable scale for exploration.

Getting In

Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG) handles a few daily flights from Jakarta on Garuda Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, and Citilink, plus Wings Air from Bali and Bandung. Prepaid taxi from the airport costs Rp 75,000 to city centre (March 2015). Trains from Surabaya take about 3 hours for Rp 30,000-50,000. Buses connect from Surabaya's Purabaya terminal in 2-3 hours.

Getting Around

The main form of local transport is the becak (three-wheeled pedicab). Gojek and Grab motorcycle taxis are widely available for getting around the city. The telephone area code is 0341.

When to Go

Malang has a tropical highland climate with temperatures ranging from 18.7°C to 29.5°C. The dry season (April-October) is the best time to visit for trekking and sightseeing. The wet season runs November-March and can cause flooding and landslides on mountain roads, making Mount Bromo access difficult.

Things to Do

The region is rich in cultural attractions: Singosari Temple (1300 AD Hindu temple, 12km north of city) and nearby Ken Dedes bathing pools showcase the great Hindu kingdoms. Ijen Boulevard has colonial architecture, Brawijaya Army Museum, and Sunday Car Free Day. Adventure-seekers can rent 150cc motorbikes from Moto East Java (Rp 200,000/day) for independent Mount Bromo trips, a 2-3 hour ride each way through the Sea of Sand.
