Why go?

Lusaka is Zambia's commercial and governmental heart, home to roughly one in six Zambians (2.7 million people). The city offers a cosmopolitan mix—Indian restaurants along Chindo Road, South African chain malls, and authentic African markets like Lusaka City Market and Soweto Market. It's a practical hub: the place where overland travelers stock up, change money, and catch buses north to Tanzania or south to Victoria Falls, but also a city worth spending a few days exploring for its markets, museums, and nearby wildlife ranches.

Getting there

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) sits well-signposted near the city. Yango ride-hailing app is available for airport transfers. For overland arrivals, the Inter-City terminal and Lusaka railway station serve as main bus and train hubs. From the airport, taxis run around US$2 for short rides (negotiate before boarding). Wakmaf Bus Services (run by Maxwell Katyamba) offers transport for 1-7 people or groups up to 29.

Get around

Minibuses are ubiquitous and cheap—single rides cost about US$0.50. Four major bus stations serve routes in and out of "town" (city centre). Routes aren't posted; conductors shout destinations through windows. One connection in town gets you anywhere in the city. Taxis come in sky blue or light grey (usually Toyota Corollas) with no meters—negotiate a price before entering. US$2 is a fair tourist rate for short rides. Yango app is available. Walking is feasible by day, but at night avoid walking—manhole covers are unreliable and drivers don't yield to pedestrians. A torch is recommended for night walks.

When to go

Lusaka's climate chart shows a clear dry season from May-October with virtually no rainfall (0.0-2.7mm monthly May-August) and pleasant temperatures ranging from 10.5°C (July) to 31.5°C (September/October). The wet season runs November-April, with December-March receiving 168-209mm of rain. The best time to visit is May-October. Dutch Reformed Church Market occurs on the last Saturday of each month; EastPark Mall hosts Sunday markets.

Fish Eagle Backpackers (159 Mwambula Road, Jesmondine) offers 8-bed dorms from US$8 with free WiFi, cable TV, and swimming pool. Pioneer Camp, 14 km from the airport, charges US$12 per person for camping. Mid-range options include Magodi Lodge (from K250) near Novare Great North mall and Fallsway Suites near the airport.

Food and drink

Lusaka specializes in Indian cuisine; Chindo Road is the closest thing to a restaurant strip. For Korean BBQ, try Arirang Korean Restaurant (10am-11pm) near the airport—Korean owners import quality Zambian beef. Marlin Restaurant at the Lusaka Club on Los Angeles Boulevard is known for pepper steak (porterhouse recommended over fillet) with mains from K70,000 excluding 27% VAT and service. Melsim Lodge Ethiopian Restaurant (north of old airport, behind Flamingo Supermarket) offers authentic Ethiopian cuisine around K50,000 per person. Mint Cafe in Arcades Mall serves coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and cakes. For nightlife, The Cha Bar at Lusaka Backpackers is the most easy-going spot with local Mosi beer. Rhapsody's stays open late; Chez Ntemba has several branches playing Rumba and African rhythms; Johnny's Chinese is centrally located.

Stay safe

Lusaka's reputation for crime is exaggerated compared to Nairobi, Johannesburg, or Lagos. Standard precautions apply: avoid walking at night, don't make valuables visible (pickpockets target tourists), and keep only needed cash for the day. HIV/AIDS is endemic—use protection if sexually active. Victoria Hospital (5498 Lunsenfwa Rd, near East Park Mall) offers malaria testing for K230 with results in 10 minutes.
