Why go?

Lonavla and neighboring Khandala are the twin hill stations closest to Mumbai, offering an escape from the city's heat and humidity. The Western Ghats provide lush scenery, especially dramatic during monsoon when waterfalls come alive. While Lion's and Tiger's Points can be chaotic with street food vendors and monkeys, the surrounding region offers quieter trails and cave temples for those willing to explore beyond the main viewpoints.

Getting in

Lonavla is about 90 km from Mumbai and 65 km from Pune, accessible by road and train. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway passes nearby, making driving the fastest option at roughly 1.5-2 hours from Mumbai. Lonavala railway station sits on the Mumbai-Chennai route with frequent local trains from Mumbai's CST and Pune. State Transport buses connect from both cities at affordable rates.

Getting around

Local transport consists of auto-rickshaws, shared taxis, and State Transport buses. State Transport buses run from the bus stand to Rajmachi Point and other scenic spots along the Ghat section. For Tiger's Leap and Lion's Point, you can take a bus to I.N.S. Shivaji and complete the remaining 1.6 km on foot via a steep climb.

When to go

Monsoon (June-September) is peak season when the hills turn green and waterfalls reach full force at Bushy Dam and Tiger's Leap. Summer (March-May) offers drier conditions ideal for trekking and exploring caves like Karla Caves. Winter months see Lonavla Lake dry up. The weekend influx from Mumbai and Pune can overwhelm popular spots, so weekday visits are preferable during high season.

Where to stay

Lonavla offers accommodation across all budgets, from hostels like The Hosteller (dormitories and family rooms) to boutique hotels like Citrus Hotel near Telephone Exchange. Kumar Resort and Water Park ranges from ₹5,000-15,000 while lakeside camping at Pawna Nature Camp costs around ₹1,200 per night. Many private homeowners rent out their properties to weekend vacationers. During monsoon, advance booking is strongly advisable as the hill station fills quickly.

Food and drink

Street food is the heart of Lonavla's culinary scene: hot masala chai (₹10-15 per cup), vadapav (vegetarian potato patty in chickpea batter, ₹20-30), bhajiyas (fried snacks, ₹30-40), and corn on the cob at major tourist spots. Buvachi Misal behind Fariya's Resort serves authentic Mumbai-style misal pav. Lonavla is famous for chikki (nut brittle) from Maganlal's, Purohit's, and A-1 Chikki stores. Cooper's Fudge near the station offers flavored fudge starting at ₹300 for 250 grams. Alcohol is permitted; Regal Wines in the market stocks imported spirits like Johnnie Walker. Coconut water is refreshing during hot summer months.

Things to do

Tiger's Leap (Tiger Point) is a cliff-top with a 650+ m sheer drop and a seasonal waterfall active during monsoon. Bushy Dam offers sitting on rocks beneath the dam's force—popular for getting drenched. Karla Caves near Lonavla are Buddhist cave shrines from the 3rd-2nd century BC. Duke's Nose in Khandala, 12 km away, is a hiking landmark named after the Duke of Wellington. The Celebrity Wax Museum at Lonavla Square Mall features figures of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and others. Ryewood Park and Shivaji Udyan provide green picnic spaces with an ancient Shiva temple inside. Shivlinga viewpoint offers quieter valley views with bhajiyas and cutting chai at around ₹10.

Safety

Monkey management is crucial—do not feed them or leave food visible, as they can become aggressive. Street vendors near major viewpoints may overcharge foreign tourists; confirm prices before ordering. The steep trek down to Tiger's Leap waterfall should only be attempted by confident hikers when water current is manageable. Dogs and cows roam freely in tourist areas. While generally safe, avoid isolated trails after dark.
