Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage exists in larger villages but is limited on remote trails. Free Wi-Fi available at some cafés including Blomster bringen and Du Verden. Consider offline maps for hiking.
Daylight
From late May to mid-July, enjoy 24-hour daylight (midnight sun). Conversely, polar night means no sunrise from December 9 to January 4. Shoulder seasons offer dramatic transitional light.
Food
Local cuisine centers on cod in various forms: stockfish (dried), klippfisk (salted-dry), and fresh. Baccalao appears on restaurant menus. Limited restaurant options and high prices mean self-catering is common.
Money
Norway uses Norwegian Krone (NOK). Norway is expensive—budget 1000-1500 NOK daily. Card payments are universal and cash is rarely needed. Avoid currency exchange at airports for better rates.
Transport
E10 highway connects main islands via bridges and tunnels. Ferries supplement road access. Regional airports at Leknes and Svolvær connect to Bodø and Oslo. Hitchhiking is common and safe.
Weather
Despite being at Arctic latitudes, the Gulf Stream keeps temperatures surprisingly mild (up to 23°C in summer, around freezing in winter). However, weather changes rapidly and wind can be harsh—always carry layers.
