Get In

Lennox Head sits 776 km north of Sydney and 211 km south of Brisbane, making it accessible by road from either major city. The town is located 20 minutes north of Byron Bay and 15 minutes south of Ballina. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (Route 640 bus) connects directly to Lennox Head with services running seven days a week, except Christmas Day. No direct train service exists; the nearest train stations are in Casino or Lismore with bus connections required.

Get Around

Lennox Head is compact enough to explore on foot along Ballina Street, but reaching attractions like Lake Ainsworth requires a vehicle or bicycle. Taxi service is available from Ballina Taxis (Freecall 1800 992 066) but must be booked in advance as there is no taxi rank. Public bus services are limited to routes connecting Lismore, Ballina, and Byron Bay. The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport shuttle (Route 640) also serves the town.

When To Go

The surf is consistent year-round, with the best waves typically during the cooler months from March to October. Summer (December-February) brings bigger crowds and school holiday bookings are essential. The annual whale migration passes by Lennox Point from May to November, offering excellent land-based viewing opportunities. Spring (September-November) brings wildflowers to the Lennox Head Heath area behind Lake Ainsworth. Dolphins are resident year-round and can often be spotted surfing alongside board riders.

Things To Do

Lennox Point offers a famous long right-hand break that draws surfers to the Lennox National Surfing Reserve. The 65-meter cliff is also a hang-gliding launch point and an excellent whale and dolphin watching platform with a new trail from the boardwalk. Lake Ainsworth, a freshwater dune lake with tannin-stained tea tree waters, provides protected conditions for windsurfing beginners; equipment hire is available from the eastern shore. Snorkeling at the Moat reef off Seven Mile Beach within Cape Byron Marine Park reveals tropical fish, crustaceans, and shellfish. Safety

Always swim between the red and yellow flags patrolled by Surf Lifesavers at Seven Mile Beach, which is patrolled seasonally. Strong rips occur when surf conditions are rough. Hang-gliders should only launch from Lennox Point in appropriate wind conditions. The northern section of Seven Mile Beach allows 4WD access via Camp Drewe Rd with a permit ($96 for 6 months, $166 for 12 months). Dog walkers can exercise pets leash-free from the northern access point at Lake Ainsworth.

WiFi is available at several cafes throughout the village center. Internet voucher purchases are available at Seagrass grocery store at the south end of the shopping area. New internet facilities have been added to the town in recent years, improving connectivity for visitors.

Lennox Head is a relatively affordable coastal destination compared to nearby Byron Bay. Budget travelers should expect to spend AUD $80-120 per day covering accommodation in dorms or budget rooms (in nearby towns), basic meals, and local transport. Lennox Head makes an ideal base for exploring the Northern Rivers region. Byron Bay is 20 minutes north featuring the iconic Cape Byron lighthouse and vibrant backpacker scene. Ballina is 10-15 minutes south with shops, restaurants, and the Richmond River for kayaking. Lismore is 40 minutes inland offering the largest regional city experience. The most practical way to reach Lennox Head is via Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (Route 640 bus) or driving on the Pacific Highway. Within town, book taxis in advance as there is no rank.

Subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. Best surf conditions typically March-October. Whale watching May-November from Lennox Point.
