Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is limited; valleys have dead zones. Higher ground provides better reception. No WiFi in the backcountry.
Equipment
Bring compass, good topographic maps (1:50,000 or 1:100,000), and navigation skills—only the nature trail is well-marked. Portable stove essential.
Etiquette
Respect reindeer husbandry areas and gold diggers' claims (private property). Keep dogs on leash. Leave no trace camping applies.
Money
Carry sufficient cash for boat services (€13–16/person) and any local purchases; nearest ATMs in Inari. Most services require cash.
Packing
Bring denatured alcohol stove fuel ('sinoli'/'marinoli'), fishing permit if needed, and mosquito protection for summer months.
Safety
Brown bears present but not aggressive if undisturbed. Inform someone of your plans. Emergency number 112 works throughout Finland.
Transport
No roads inside the park; access via Njurkulahti, Angeli road trailheads, or Lisma. Shared taxi runs along road 9553 with sparse schedule.
Weather
Arctic climate with extreme cold possible midwinter. Snowfall can start September. Always carry rain gear and adequate insulation even in summer.
