Overview
Lauterbrunnen is a dramatic U-shaped valley in the Bernese Oberland with 72 waterfalls cascading down sheer cliff walls—the village name means "clear springs" but visitors hear only their roar. Tolkien hiked through here in 1911 at age 19 and later used the landscape as inspiration for Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings.
