Overview

Lancaster is one of the oldest inland towns in the United States, founded in 1730, and serves as the cultural and commercial hub of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The city of around 59,000 people (2021) sits in Lancaster County, home to one of the largest Amish communities in the country.

Culture

Lancaster is the center of Amish Country. Mennonite Information Center, Amish Farm and House, and Amish Village offer cultural education. Many Amish tours require reservations. Horse-drawn buggies are common on rural roads—drive carefully.

Food

Smorgasbord (all-you-can-eat PA Dutch buffet) is the signature cuisine. Central Market is the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the US (Tue, Fri, Sat mornings). Refugee communities have brought diverse international food options.

Transport

Amtrak's Keystone Service stops at Lancaster Station near downtown. RRTA buses require exact change and stop running by 6PM. Outside the city, there are no bus stops—you flag down buses from the roadside.

Weather

Summers are warm and humid (75-85°F), ideal for outdoor Amish Country drives. Fall brings peak foliage and harvest festivals. Winters are cold (20-40°F) with less tourist traffic. Spring is mild with blooming farmland.
