Overview
Lamego is the oldest city in the kingdom of Portugal, dating back to Roman times, and was where D. Afonso Henriques was acclaimed the first King of Portugal in 1140 at the legendary Cortes de Lamego.

Dress modestly when visiting churches and the sanctuary. The baroque staircase is a pilgrimage route—climbing is done reverently.
Food
Bola de Lamego (filled bread dough) is the must-try local specialty, found near the cathedral. Regional ham, kid in the oven, and Lamego balls are also notable.

Portugal uses the euro (€). ATMs are available in the city center. Most restaurants and hotels accept cards, but smaller tascas may be cash-only.
Transport
A24 motorway connects Lamego to Viseu and Vila Real. Local bus services link to nearby towns. A car is convenient for winery visits in the Douro Valley.

Lamego is part of the Demarcated Port Wine Region. Local producers include Raposeira (still and sparkling wines) and Port wine estates.
