Overview

Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly James Island, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving the stark remnants of the West African slave trade. The island gained global fame as the setting in Alex Haley's novel and television series Roots, where his ancestor Kunta Kinteh was captured and shipped to Maryland.
