Why Go
Košice is Slovakia's second largest city with a population of around 240,000, serving as the capital of Košice Self-governing Region. Despite being off the typical tourist trail, it offers a hidden gem experience with its colorful medieval and modern history, lively arts scene, and vibrant party scene. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2013 and is known as "The City of Peace" for its non-violent ethnic tolerance throughout history. Visitors can explore Gothic architecture, enjoy affordable prices, and engage with friendly locals who are often pleased that foreigners take interest in their city.

Getting In
Košice has a small international airport (KSC) located 6 km south of the city centre, with connections to destinations in Central Europe and the British Isles. Bus 23 connects the airport to the city centre. International bus services like Cassoviaexpres (€39 to Budapest, €69 to Vienna) and Izijet (€39 to Budapest) operate from the McDonald's parking lot next to the indoor swimming pool. The Košice Railway Station is a 10-minute walk from the city centre and offers connections to various destinations.

Getting Around
Košice has a small and compact city centre that is mostly navigable by foot. The tram system is cheap and efficient for those staying in suburbs, with good bus and tram connections around the whole city. All main sights of the city are within walking distance, making it easy to explore on foot.

When to Go
Košice has a continental climate with hot, humid summers (July-August temperatures can rise to 30°C) and cold winters (December-February with temperatures of -10°C and significant snowfall). Spring (late April/May) is the best season to visit with blooming flowers, though damp weather may occur. Autumn is also good with warm temperatures and beautiful fall foliage in October. Summer months may provide a lull in the usual Friday/Saturday nightlife, but the compact bar scene offers hidden gems regardless of the season.

Where to Stay
The city centre offers accommodation ranging from budget hostels to luxury hotels. Budget options include Hostel Happy Bull Kosice (from $40/approximately €37), Hostel Vodná 1 (from $32/approximately €30), and K2 Hostel popular with younger travelers. Mid-range options include Penzión Horse inn (single €70, double €80 with free breakfast) and Penzión Villa Regia near the cathedral. Luxury accommodations include Hotel Yasmin, Hotel Zlaty Dukat, and Boutique Hotel Bristol. The only camping option is Autocamping Salaš Barca with cabins for rent.

Food and Drink
Hlavná and adjacent streets have the greatest concentration of restaurants with prices slightly higher downtown. On Sundays, restaurants often open only for dinner. Budget eating options include Panda (average lunch €3.50, Asian noodles €1.50), Pizzeria Zvon (€4-10), and Burekas (€3-9) for falafel and hummus. There is one completely vegetarian restaurant (Ajvega), though most restaurants offer vegetarian dishes. The city has a vibrant nightlife with many bars, including Beer House (cheapest beer €1.06/0.5l), Staromestská piváreň (Czech style brewpub), and Irish Pub Diesel. Traditional Slovak cuisine can be found at Karczma Mlyn (€8-15) and Pub u Kohuta (€5-15).

Things to Do
Most attractions are along the pedestrianized Hlavná ulica (Main Street). Key sights include St Elizabeth's Cathedral (€2 entrance, €6 for tower and monuments), Mikluš's Prison (part of East Slovak Museum, €8 for four exhibitions), and the Singing Fountain. The city offers museums including the East Slovak Museum, Slovak Technical Museum (€8), and Museum of Aviation (€8, adults). Outdoor activities include the Zoo (€8 adults, €5 children including DinoPark), Children's Heritage Railway (€3-6), and summer toboggan track (children €1.50, adults €3). Winter sports are available at Kavečany ski resort with three alpine pistes.

Safety
Košice is generally safe, but it is advisable to avoid certain areas late at night such as parks and the vicinity of the train station. Exercise caution in places with concentrations of homeless individuals. Luník IX faces significant socio-economic challenges and may not be ideal for tourists. Standard safety practices for women and solo travelers are recommended, such as staying in well-lit areas and avoiding isolated locations after dark. Emergency services can be reached at 112.

The Central Post office is located at Poštová 20, with additional post offices near the railway station (Thurzova 3) and in Tesco extra supermarket. Košice offers good value for budget travelers. Lunch at Panda can cost around €3.50, while Asian noodles are €1.50. Beer at Beer House starts at €1.06 for 0.5l. Museum entrance fees are typically €4-8 for adults. Accommodation in hostels starts from approximately €30-37 per night. The city is significantly cheaper than Western European destinations, making it an excellent budget destination in Central Europe.

Day Trips
Immediate surroundings offer various hiking, sightseeing and relaxation possibilities. Nearby destinations include Prešov (35 km north, frequent buses and trains), Herľany (26 km northeast) with a geyser that fires approximately every 36 hours, and Slanec (28 km east) with fortification and hiking trails into Slanské vrchy. The Slovak Tokaj wine region is 58 km southeast, producing internationally famous white wine. Zadielská dolina Canyon is accessible from Turňa nad Bodvou (36 km southwest).

Etiquette
As a Slovak city, general European etiquette applies. Dress appropriately when visiting churches and religious sites. Tipping is customary in restaurants (typically 10% if service charge not included). Slovak is the primary language, though Hungarian and English are also spoken in tourist areas. The city has a large Hungarian-speaking minority and Roma community. Respect for local customs and traditions is appreciated.
